Kyu Grading

February 17, 2012

Well done to all students at yesterdays grading.  A fantastic class for both those that were grading and those that weren’t.

A special mention to Christopher Doolan who has now graded to 1st Kyu and will be training towards his Shodan-ho.

Facebook group

January 19, 2012

A Facebook group for members and parents has been in operation for a few months now.  Initially I had hidden it to ensure that only the relevant people were subscribed to it.

I’ve now opened this up so that anyone can join, without having to initially add them.   Requests still require authorisation, but this time you can request membership by going to the following link – http://www.facebook.com/groups/siuloong/

The group is designed to give information and promote discussion on aspects of the club and its members.  Videos that can be used as training aids will be posted for Kihon, Kata and Kumite, so members and parents alike are encouraged to participate in discussion.

Any members that might have other members are encouraged to ‘share’ this story via Facebook to spread the word.

First Class of the New Year

January 13, 2012

A strong turnout for the first class back of the year.  Encouraging to see everyone coming back quickly.  Hopefully all students and the club have a positive year ahead.

A grading is pencilled in for late January/early February.

Also, students and parents should check the event calendar and the Facebook group for any competition dates.

Sunday Classes Cancelled

October 10, 2011

The Sunday classes at the Jock Stein Sports Centre have been cancelled due to lack of support over the past few months.  The instructors are looking to move the class to a different night.  Please let an instructor know what nights suit best, or what nights don’t suit at all to ensure that the night is given the best possible chance to succeed.

Well done to all the team that competed in the second Scottish Grand Prix. Very tough competition, the toughest the competitors have had in a long time. Some excellent performances in Kata were rewarded with the following medals. No ‘automatic’ medals today as all medals were contested for.

Gold – Rebecca Inglis
Silver – Cameron Williamson
Bronze – Dylan Kerr; Charley Reid; Grant Wyper

Siu Loong sent a small squad to the first Grand Prix of the year, consisting of Aidan Feeney, Matthew Webb, Cameron Williamson, Jude Herron, Colin Sullivan and Agnes McClelland.

The results were as follows:

Aidan Feeney – GOLD (Kata), GOLD (Kumite)
Cameron Williamson – GOLD (Kata)
Matthew Webb – GOLD (Kumite)
Jude Herron – BRONZE (Kata), BRONZE (Kumite)
Colin Sullivan – BRONZE (Kata)

Congratulations to all that entered! Some highlights include Cameron and Jude’s final round Katas, Aidan’s draw in the Kumite final, only to pull away in Sai Shiai, a comfortable 3-0 win.

The Glasgow Karate Open took place in Kirkintilloch on the 26th March 2011. Only one competitor from Siu Loong entered, Aidan Feeney aged 14. Coach Grant Wyper and spectator Margaret Feeney also attended. Aidan fought his way to the Gold medal in the Male advanced grade 13-15 years category.

He negotiated his way through the quarter finals, winning narrowly after a one minute extension. In the semi-final, Aidan took an early lead before his opponent pulled a waza-ari back. Aidan sat back, making use of a gedan-barai, gyaku-tsuki combination to score the winning Ippon.

The final was a much less tense affair, with Aidan winning with two waza-ari.   A fantastic win given the high standard of competitor in the category.

Sohan Eiji Ogasahara, 9th Dan, head instructor of the JAPAN KENSHUKAI KARATE ASSOCIATION passed away earlier this week at the age of 76. This is a great loss to the whole karate world, and the lineage of Shitoryu. Master Ogasahara was a direct student of the founder of Shitoryu Karate – Kenwa Mabuni. Ogasahara Sensei has nurtured many great exponents of the Shitoryu style, most notably Hidetoshi Nakahashi and Sei Iwasa.

Siu Loong express the condolences to his near friends and family.
